On Wednesday I turned 26.
And it got me thinking about things I want to do differently this year. Things I should do differently during the next quarter century of my life.
In my 26th year, I will make better financial decisions. I will do less talking, and more doing. I be more vocal about the things I want/need and why I want/need them. I will try to be a better person; a better daughter, a better sister, a better friend. I will stop putting off the goals that matter the most to me.
I will remember that I have more than I ever expected to have, more than I often feel I deserve. I will remember that I am not the only one who was promised “go to college and it will be easier to get a good job,” and I am not the only one for whom that promise was not kept.
Perhaps most importantly, in my 26th year I will remember this: that I am not a failure, just because I live at home and drive my mother’s minivan. I am not a failure just because I have a part-time retail job and no health insurance, while my high school classmates all seem to have nice jobs, nice cars, nice things, nice spouses, and nice babies. I will remember that I do not want and have never wanted babies, and that using this as a reason to be jealous, using this as proof that someone has their life together, is ridiculous.
I will remember that I have always had large plans for my life, and like building a big house, building a big future requires laying a substantial foundation. If your footings and your foundation aren’t properly established, the entire house can fall down around you. When I am feeling like I have failed at everything, and I do not feel like a worthwhile person, I will remember that building the future you want takes time, and that I am taking the steps I need to be taking. And someday, I will finish my foundation and start building the walls.
